Ligo and Jani

This weekend is the celebration of Midsummer. In Latvia this is known as Ligo and Jani. All the Liga's and Janis' have their names days during this holiday. This holiday, when celebrated in native style in usually accompanied by lots of beer, the traditional cheese with caraway seeds and wreaths made either from wildflowers or oak leaves.

We celebrated by getting together with some friends from various churches, and forming a small camp. We did this last here too. We went out to the countryside, and camped near a small river. We all pitched tents and had an eating tent too.

It seems to rain every Midsummer and this year was no exception, it seemed a complete duplicate of last year's weather. When we arrived it was cloudy, then everyone arrived and it started raining during our opening service. It rained quite some time and so we spent a long time eating. When it stopped raining there were some games and other activities.

Janis and I delegated ourselves as the shish kabob team and over the two days grilled about 30 pounds of meat!

In the later evening there was a scavenger hut through the surrounding territory, but we retired early, and were kept away by the noise and an uneven tent site:)

Sunday we attended the local Lutheran church, which has the biggest bell of all the country churches in Latvia and can be heard for a 15 kilometer radius around the area.

It was a nice weekend, though a bit buggy, and wet!
