A Blonde Moment

NOTE: I spelled blond when orginally writing this with an - e -. However, the computer corrected me and said it was spelled without an -e- My mom also corrected me. I looked it up in the dictionary online and find both ways can be used correctly. So if you are offended by my leaving off the -e- in the rest of the uses of blonde than please be aware- it was intentional and can be fixed. I am curious to know which way YOU think is correct. :)

- - - -
I am not one to tell blond jokes or endorse them but sometimes I have such a silly/stupid moment that I know no better way to refer to it than as having a blond moment.

Yesterday my husband had a very hard day at work and I being tired from baking cupcakes for church decided we needed to go out for supper. I informed him so by phone and wanting to catch him before he got home so he didn't have to traverse our horribly slippery, junky road by bike we rushed off to the garage where he has to leave his work vehicle (a 1-2 min. drive from home).

We got there to the gate being closed. I phoned Janis and found out he was at home, having just arrived as we sped away. (Of course he came the other way and I didn't see him in my rear view mirror). He said he was tired, and just wanted to stay home. But I convinced him chilling with us would be good for us and we could eat out together. So we rushed home to get him as he finished heating the house (making the fire in our coal burning stove).

As I waited in the car I had a realization that we (my husband and I relax differently). He had had a hard day "in the world" and wanted to escape from it by staying home. I had been home all day with the kids and wanted to escape the house. I decided I would understand if he didn't feel like going for my plan of eating out and went in and told him so. He seemed grateful and so we parted ways.

The kids and I took the cupcakes to the church and the ladies their LOVED how they looked. They were my last baking to do for the marriage seminar and I had made some very pretty cupcakes. I will add a picture another time.

Then we headed to the pizza place. We had to wait at the railroad crossing and we were the first car at the gate.I turned the car off as I usually do and we waited. The kids loved seeing the train as usual and all was well UNTIL I tried to start the car. It wouldn't start!!!! Here I was, STUCK, the first car in a very long line of cars wanting to cross the tracks. So I turned on my emergency lights and called Janis. He said to have someone push me and try to get it going since beyond the  tracks there was a slight hill down.

Everyone drove past and no one stopped. I decided to get out of the car thinking that if someone saw I was pregnant they would stop. It worked, and a young man ran over offering his assistance. I told him I needed to be pushed - but just then the gates closed as another train came. He got his friends and the 3 of them waited for the train to pass to push me.

OK. So I have never had to be at the steering wheel when my car was pushed/jumped like this. I asked both Janis and this guy what I had to do. They said to have it in second and slowly release the clutch. (Is that what it is called in English- sorry I am spacing out here now.). I thought I might be able to handle that, but offered one of those guys to sit in for me. They thought I would do ok. Yeah, right.

Once they started pushing me I wondered if I was supposed to have the key turned so the car could start. So I turned it, but nothing seemed to really happen. . . anyhow I don't know if I did right or wrong or it just didn't work but somehow I rolled a ways on and they were left in the dust. I realized I wasn't going to be able get the car going and turned onto a side road.

I called home again and Janis said he would come rescue us.

We waited, and waited. I opened the hood and tried to wiggle the connections. No luck. Daniel asked me if I was a big girl and was going to fix the car. I laughed and told him I wasn't that big of a girl to know how to fix it.

Finally Janis got there and he and the other man got the car going- by pushing it. They at least knew what they were doing.

So then our next dilemma, what to do about supper? Janis had eaten at home. The kids and I had not eaten and it was now 19:00. I tried to convince Daniel we could go home and eat and that it wouldn't be good to turn the car off again so soon. But he had been so looking forward to pizza and so in the end we all ended up going.

We ended up having a lovely evening. Janis got into a better mood and we had a pleasant family evening out.

I realized today the second half of my blond moment was that I didn't have the car in second speed, but in third. In my stress of the moment I was so sure 2nd was next to 3rd. But it isn't. . . at least not on our car. Oh how stupid I feel knowing now that I didn't do any part of the whole process correctly. No wonder the car didn't start. Well, at least I know now, and I hope I will never forget.

Thank God for the three guys who at least got us away from the train tracks.
