Lately I had been a bit sad about missing the feeling of Fall. In the States there is a special festivity about this time of year. I love and miss a few things: Making huge piles of leaves and jumping in them. Apple orchards, fresh cider, candy apples, pumpkin patches. . . Oh, just the smell of an orchard store is so festive.
Here is Latvia orchards don't exist as you know them in the States. There are not stores at them, they don't give hay rides out to the orchard where you can choose your own apples. I have never seen anyone jump into a pile of leaves here.
Yet Fall is special even here. The gathering and reaping the produce of a productive summer make a special time of harvest bounty. We have had a lovely week of warm, sunny days. The leaves have been gorgeous and crispy, rather than the usual wet and limp. Fall can be very wet in Latvia. I have enjoyed gathering leaves and pressing them. We have made some apple juice ourselves. But still I miss the special feelings and smells of Fall in America, I guess I should try to create them here. . .
Yesterday we decided we must enjoy the sunny beauty of Fall. We went to a park and Daniel got to enjoy, I mean REALLY enjoy Fall and leaves for the first time.

You sound like homesick.
ReplyDeleteIn Latvia you can find all these feelings and things, even orchard. Except there are different special food, and special festivity like Pļaujas svētki (Harvest), Miķeļdiena and Mārtiņdiena.
I haven't seen any adult jumping in to a pile of leavs :) But many children I had :)
It's just my Latvian's opinion.
