Christmas Feelings

Christmas is just around the corner and in the rush to get things done before vacation started I haven't much felt in the Christmas spirit. I wonder at times, "What really is the Christmas spirit?" It isn't about cookies or gifts, which I haven't spent much time on at all this year. I have been yearning to put up a tree for weeks, as in America we usually do so about Thanksgiving. But Janis said here in Latvia people wait until Christmas Eve! Since I knew I couldn't wait that long, he wanted to wait for snow. But it is just a few days till Christmas and still there is no sign of snow.

Today was our appointed day to find our tree. I have never experienced the process of finding a tree. I have been used to having an artificial tree or buying one. Since I have never experienced the real process, Janis decided to exaggerate it a bit (I think). We went on a trek, looking for our tree. We walked through the park, through fields and forests, over ditches and finally we found trees. What a trek!!! Then we had to get the tree home again. We had quite an adventure and were even able to see some white tailed deer. I am plum tuckered out with all that exercise.

It is great to have our tree up, it isn't the full, bushy sort as in America. But more of a Charlie Brown style, though maybe not quite so sparse. We have real candles and lovely red balls. The tree smells simply lovely.

I am sad to not be able to be at home, with my family, in America this year. (This is the first time). We have plans to be with Janis' relatives Christmas Eve, and I am not sure yet about our plans for Christmas Day.
