An Evil Eye

Latvian can at times be quite superstitious. You would think and hope that Christians would be preserved from that, but sometimes even these old beliefs creep in unbeknown even there.

One of these things has to do with believing that by looking at a small baby you can cast an evil eye on the baby. The results would be that the baby would be fussy, and inconsolable. Which would then lead (in the practice of the pagans) to the baby having to be taken to a lady who can "remove" the evil glance. Janis said that the person is said to have a look of jealousy and when they look with that in their eye, then it is "believed" by some to leave these ill effects.

Our neighbor believes this, and had told me that her daughter was fussy because of it. I hope next time she worries about her daughter having been influenced by an evil person that she comes to me to pray to Jesus. Just recently her youngest daughter was having some eating issues, she is very tiny for her 5 months. I told my neighbor I would pray for them. I wondered what she thought of that, she didn't say at the time. But a few days later she wrote me and told me my prayers must have worked, that her daughter was eating better. Praise you Jesus!!

Now, back to the evil eye thing. Today in church as people were filing out, past Amelija sleeping in her buggy, people were admiring her. I heard lots of cute comments about my little princess, but one lady said she wasn't going to look at the baby. She said she might have a bad eye. The lady in front of her said, "But we are Christans." The other lady said, "But you never know. . ."
