I know I have mentioned some of the unique ideas, or wives tales I have heard around here. But sometimes I start wondering how these ideas are influencing me. . .
It is spring in Latvia, the weather was so beautiful today. This was the kind of day everyone wanted to spend out of doors, having a picnic, or any such thing. Sometimes you might wonder where you ought to sit on a day like this, the grass looks inviting, or maybe the step of some old building or porch or an old log. But NO, not yet, it is too early in spring, there hasn't yet been a thunder storm. It is thought, or even believed that until the first storm has come the ground is too cold for sitting on. People I know, good friends I have, believe very strongly that if they sit on a log, or the ground or a stone they could get quite ill. (And they have gotten ill)
Have you ever heard that? Tell me if you have, correct me if I'm wrong, but I had never heard that until I came here.
Today I was thinking it would be nice to put my son on a blanket in the yard to play. But then I found myself wondering, "Is it warm enough? Is the ground warm enough? There hasn't been a storm yet." Then I thought, "What! Here I am, an American, who thought that was such a strange idea, and now I am thinking the same way. Could it be there is truth in this old tale?"
You never know Risen! These ideas must have originated somehow so there may be some truth to it. You never know! I have never heard of such a thing, but I guess it's better to be safe than sorry!
ReplyDeleteI would follow the "suggestion" if I were you, if only for the reason that if your neighbors or friends saw you or Daniel on blanket outside before a thunderstorm they would be VERY concerned and worried!
We had our first storm here yesterday so I guess I can sit on the ground now huh?!
I have never heard of that wives tale either. . .
ReplyDeleteHowever the other day, while it was warm here in MN, I was walking around outside with my uncle. We came to a big mound of dirt that I hadn't ever noticed before. He said "even though it is so nice and warm outside, the ground is still full of ice. This mound is here because the ice underneath caused it to lift. After the first real rain, it should melt it and the mound will go back down."
So I guess the tale can be true :)
